Grunewaldsee

by James Glazebrook

Grunewaldsee boat in lake

Our recipe for a perfect Berlin summer day:

1. Take 1 dog. We recommend a Bully, but any dog will do.

2. Add 1 blazing hot Berlin summer day.

3. Stew in a airtight S7 train. Time may vary, but our lump of dog took 50 minutes to cook through.

4. Leave to cool for about 30 minutes (or as long as it takes to walk from Grunewald to the “dog beach” at Grunewaldsee Hundestrand).

5. Arrange your other ingredients on a picnic blanket. We recommend wine (white or rosé), bite-sized chunks of fruit and veg and assorted dips.

6. Sprinkle your dogmeat with water to keep from drying out.

7. Mix well with other dogs.

8. Enjoy. Guten Appetit!

Music Montag: DYLAN III

by James Glazebrook

DYLAN III is either insane or a visionary. Just check out the post-cyberpunk narrative about the “all-out computational arms race” that runs through “Quantum”, read with Gary Numan blankness over an oddly pastoral synth jam. Or the epic political rant that breaks down the lesson on “Iran”, like a 21st Century n-n-n-n-nineteen. “In this atomic game, reputation is at stake. But we face destruction, so things will never be the same.” Uneasy listening for the Wikileaks generation.

Tommi’s Burger Joint

by James Glazebrook

Tommy's Burger Joint Dining

I’ve finally learned my lesson: no more proclaiming that I’ve found the best burger in Berlin! Every time I think I’ve found the perfect patty, along comes another that kicks its buns! Which brings me to this week’s favourite bap-house: Tommi’s Burger Joint. The most easterly outpost of the Icelandic chain that’s kicked McDonalds out of its home country is situated on Invalidenstrasse, just a quick drunken amble from Weinbergsweg, Mitte’s best summer hangout spot. Like all of the Icelandic joints, and the one in London, it’s staffed by a family member of the eponymous Tommi – in Berlin, that would be the guy with the epic peroxide-blonde beard! What he’s cooking up is the finest Black Angus beef from a bio farm in Scotland, just one of the discoveries of the farmer Tommi when we travelled the world for a year as research. We think this was time well spent, as you can taste the passion in every perfectly grilled mouthful, in every gulp of delicious milkshake. Yet another awesome Berlin burger joint to check out – watch your waistlines people!

Formed in 1990 as a New Yoik underground supergroup and featuring one of the founding fathers of hardcore (and former Berliner) Walter Schreifels, Quicksand took the first decade of this century off to form great bands (Rival Schools) and join even greater ones (Deftones).

Here is the band covering (and nailing) a song originally recorded by some band called The Smiths:
