Shooting at Urban Spree

by Zoë Noble

When you think of quintessentially unique spaces that just embody Berlin, Urban Spree immediately springs to mind. 1,700m2 of graffiti-covered awesomeness, filled with artist studios, music venues, bars and more than a little bit of grime, this creative complex is unlike anything else.

Recently I had the opportunity to shoot a fashion editorial there, and was allowed to run riot in their basement – with all its glowing red neon and industrial piping. Swoon. Christmas had indeed come early for me, so a huge thank you to Urban Spree for letting me take over their space for the day!

You can see the full editorial on Superior Magazine and find more details about the lighting and setup I used on my photography blog, here.

Lindt Second Hand Berlin

by Zoë Noble

Lindt Second Hand Berlin Gnomes

I love that in Berlin there are still so many hidden gems just waiting to be discovered. You can be walking down a quiet street and pass something so unique, unusual or just downright weird that you wonder why people like us haven’t written about it yet? Well I’m about to do my job and blog the shit out of an awesome little store I happened upon recently, called Lindt Second Hand Berlin.

A little disclosure – I normally find vintage shopping pretty frustrating, with most things either overpriced or falling apart (Mauerpark springs to mind!). While I tend to steer well clear, on this occasion I was out with a friend who was on a mission to find a vintage dress for a wedding. So I have Hannah to thank for this little find!

Lindt Second Hand Berlin Details

Right away, I was taken aback by the attention to detail that the shopkeeper has obviously taken with the decor. There are some really wonderful details like a huge cake stand full of garden gnomes, a handmade parrot hanging from the ceiling and a child’s rocking horse nestling in between the dresses.

The owner clearly loves what she does and does it really well – presenting a selection of 50s, 60s and 70s dresses that had me watering at the mouth. Every item that I picked up seemed to have been chosen for some reason – its beautiful detailing, unique print or flattering cut.

And here’s where it gets really interesting: Lindt’s prices are REALLY REASONABLE (capitals absolutely necessary). OK, so this isn’t the place for Colours “pay-by-the-weight” bargains… But if you’re looking for great quality, carefully selected vintage pieces that won’t hurt the bank balance too much then I really recommend you check out Lindt Second Hand Berlin. P.S For all you blokes out there they do mens stuff as well!

Berlin Brands: Alpha Cruxis

by Zoë Noble

It fills me with warm fuzzies when I discover a new brand that makes me go weak at the knees AND it’s based in Berlin. Alpha Cruxis is one of those brands.

Created by Australian designer Rebecca Martin, Alpha Cruxis has just released its debut bag collection named “Geometry”, which combines stunning craftmanship with exquisite sculptural forms. Each piece is cut, sewn and finished by hand,  and boy does it show. Looking more like works of art than something you’d throw your loose change in, these babies are VERY high on my wish list.

Fashion Freitag: Festive Fluoro

by Zoë Noble

Well Berlin has finally gone full force into scary winter and as much as I love the pretty white streets, my wardrobe has gone into survival mode in response. This unfortunately means wearing clothes to match my mood, so it’s black, black and a little bit more black for good measure! To cheer myself up I’m posting some of my favourite neon pieces to get me out of my funk. Please be warned though that only ONE item of neon should ever be worn otherwise you may be mistaken for a cyber goth or mentally unstable person. Enjoy!

Fashion Freitag: Fall Favourites

by Zoë Noble

Hooray for Herbst! I’m really glad Berlin is now heading into fall and we’re waving goodbye to sweaty summer. Don’t get me wrong, summer is lovely for dining outside with friends, barbecueing in the park and relaxing by one of Berlin’s many lakes BUT it’s so boring in terms of what you can wear! I just live in long dresses and sandals to keep cool but as soon as the first leaves start to fall I’m throwing on every bit of wool I own for a much needed change. I also seem to own a ridiculous amount of coats and jackets (what kind of Geordie am I!?) and being able to start dusting them off and give them an airing is very satisfying. Hopefully we’ll get a bit of time before scary Berlin winter hits but in the meantime, here are a few of my favourite fall items.

Photo Shoot: NAME: vintage store

by Zoë Noble

Recently I had the amazing opportunity to work with the new store NAME: vintage, and shoot their Autumn campaign. Cleverly named “Trench Kiss”, the concept was to showcase some of their stunning trenches and beautifully curated vintage clothing and use Berlin as our backdrop. Even more amazing was that übercool Berlin makeup brand uslu airlines provided the most beautiful lipsticks and nail polish for our make up artist Jana Kalgajeva to work with. Here are some of my favourite photos and you can see all the shots, including some from behind the scenes, on my Facebook Page. If you like what you see, like my Page to see more shoots and streetstyle.

Bread & Butter Summer 2012

by Guest Blogger

We love Bread & Butter Berlin but we’ve been to every BBB event since we moved here (and one before that!)… we figured it was time to get someone else’s impressions of the world’s awesomest fashion tradeshow. So we sent along David Yates, from the excellent expat blog andBerlin, to check out all the action.

When James and Zoë gave me the opportunity to go to The Rock – Bread & Butter Berlin’s Summer 2012 event at Tempelhof Airport – I was delighted. Not only would I get the chance to experience a major fashion event, I would be inside a Berlin landmark that I’ve been meaning to take a tour of for a while now. And I wasn’t disappointed.

Bread & Butter Summer 2012 check-in

Walking into the main building I was immediately in awe of the monumental check in area. And walking into the exhibition space I got my first glimpse of the huge array of goods on display.

I’m no fashionista but I’ve always loved clothes and I’ve got a thing for watches and sunglasses so I was like the proverbial kid in a candy store.

My lasting impression of the show was the stallholders’ clever use of merchandising to represent their brands. Tote bags were popular with everyone but there were also key rings, fingerboards, water bottles and one of my personal favourites, Pepe’s mobile phone handsets (as well as their “I’m with Pepe” t-shirts). But the real stand out had to be Tom Tailor’s Polo matches, played on the airport’s apron in a sand arena with an inflatable ball.

And I wonder, will rainbow coloured hair be the next big thing?

Andreas Murkudis Concept Store

by Zoë Noble

Andreas Murkudis 1

Berlin, you temptress you. Here I was, counting my pennies like a good girl, and you’ve only gone and opened up a concept store that makes me want to sell everything I own and clean them out Victoria Beckham stylee. Andreas Murkudis sits in the former Tagesspiegel building in northern Schöneberg and this light, airy space is more reminiscent of an art gallery than your average designer store.

With collections, all handpicked by Murkudis himself, from the likes of Céline, Dries van Noten and Maison Martin Margiela – and some right bobby dazzler (Geordie for beautiful) homewares – I ooh-ed and ahh-ed my way around the store. I became mesmerized by one of the Bi-Cabas Céline totes (pictured below) that has been on my “if I ever win the lottery” list… very, VERY tempting. One more visit to this she-devil of a store and I might just be swayed!
