PANTRY
by James Glazebrook
PANTRY specialises in “Iberian-Pacific” cuisine, a fusion of the chefs’ training in Melbourne’s Thai restaurants and love of the Mediterranean. For us, that meant starters of an expertly-spiced hot and sour beef salad with rocket, wild herbs, pomegranate and orange couscous, and grilled Pulpo Fuego with corn crackers, chili and caramelised crispy pork. I then suppressed my envy as Zoë tucked into a succulent entrecôte served with sweet potato pommes and PANTRY’s “Double Impact” blend of Bernaise sauce and BBQ paste… but when I sunk my teeth into my perfectly-crisped free range chicken with liquorice Spargel all my jealousy melted away.
My only criticism is that PANTRY’s crème brûlée-like “Californication” (!) take on key lime pie strayed a little too far from the American pud I love so much. Never mind – as the menu changes monthly, we look forward to seeing what other sweet treats emerge from their open kitchen. Overall, PANTRY is a sleek but welcoming restaurant which turns out some of the most distinctive, well-flavoured dishes we’ve tasted in Berlin; an exciting addition to the city’s cuisine scene.

ULA has fusion fish/sashimi dishes, GOOD, but I like more traditional offerings. The drinks are GREAT at ULA, but the Pantry was very impressive. I liked it even more so than Katz Orange. SUPER place, and Fantastic food! I have lived in Berlin for 6 years, not too many mid ranged FANTASTIC places. Going back to the Pantry again, this weekend with in-laws.
Glad we could introduce you to both restaurants. It does feel like Berlin’s improving in the mid-range dining stakes
I was up in that part of town specifically to eat at Rutz wine bar and boy am I glad they were closed. The closest place that had a great menu and great aesthetics was Pantry. Before I stepped in the door I’d never seen or heard of the restaurant. Holy shit, what a gold mine! The staff was well rounded with the knowledge of their menu and the wines and spirits they offered. Not sure how to express how good the food was. Look, I’ve traveled around the world for many years seeking the best food at each location I visit, I’ve had numerous celebrity or otherwise celebrated chefs create menus for me at my challenge to them…..I’ve eaten a lot of great food. Pantry puts out top notch gear from the first plate to the desert. It was so refreshing to find a restaurant which knows that squid was meant to be grilled, not fried. The combination of apples and lemongrass with veal cheeks was amazing and surprisingly the portion size was huge. I may end up there again tomorrow night, there wasn’t one thing on the menu that I don’t desire to taste.
Wow, what a glowing review! Do you work at Pantry?
The food is JUST AMAZING, from start to finish! The Ox cheeks are so tender & melts in your mouth. The Artic Char …was just WOW! A great blend of Thai, Pacific, Med flavors in every bite. Classic New York style restaurant.
You’ve been eating well lately!

Lovely pics, as always. What is that fruit in the second to last one? — one of the more erotic fruits I’ve ever seen lol.
Um, strawberries? Joking – that’s a lychee, which tastes pretty good, but I could have done without its hairy skin!
Beautiful photographs Zoë! The beef salad looks particularly delicious.
