Music Montag: André Uhl, “Black Box/Outside”

by James Glazebrook

André Uhl live

André Uhl is one of Berlin’s most gifted electronic producers. Since we last featured him, he’s been working on getting his live performance tight, as evidenced by these shots of his moody audiovisual sets. His latest release, out today on Bad Panda records, is typical of his meticulous style, with darkly cinematic synthscapes woven through with deep, intricate percussion. Listen to “Black Box” and “Outside” right here, and visit André Uhl’s Bandcamp to download the tracks. Start off your Monday mean and moody!

Music Montag: Best of Berlin 2013

by James Glazebrook

What have EnyaFleetwood Mac, Chris Isaak, Rihanna, M.I.A, Destiny’s Child and Kendrick Lamar got in common? Nope, they haven’t formed a Gayngs-style supergroup (we wish!)… but all of them have had tracks covered or remixed by überlin’s Music Montag picks for 2013. Here’s two hours of our favourite music made in and about Berlin this year, from electro to acoustic, from heavy heavy metal to fat dirty bass. Enjoy 🙂

Feeling nostalgic? Listen to the Best of Berlin 2012 here.

Music Montag: André Uhl video EXCLUSIVE

by James Glazebrook

André Uhl

Berlin beatsmith André Uhl has kindly give us the exclusive premiere of his new video, “Native”. Uhl, who created the video himself, is keeping the details of its production close to his chest, saying only that it was “shot with a hand cam on a very foggy day in a forest in Berlin and edited without any filters or visual effects.”

My personal take is that the visuals match the creeping, organic tone of the audio, in a kind of slow-mo Evil Dead-demon style. Anyway, it’s awesome – and available below, along with a stream of the EP from which it is taken, Creatures (out now on Bad Panda Records). We give you: “Native”, by André Uhl.

Music Montag: WE TRUST / André Uhl

“Jesus Christ, it’s beautiful”

As descriptions go, that’s going to be hard to beat.

That comment pops up halfway along the Soundcloud upload of André Uhl’s remix of WE TRUST’s twee acoustic jam “Time (Better Not Stop)”. The Berlin DJ and producer’s take is the shy nephew of foltronica legends Prefuse 73 and (early) Four Tet, wrapped in its warmest winter woolies. (Told you I couldn’t match that description!)

Uhl has been in Berlin for nearly five years, and is now resident at Salon Wilde Renate, playing IDM, glitch-hop and alternative electronica. His WE TRUST rework is the first in a series of remixes to be released track by track over the next few weeks. To hear more of Uhl’s light-handed production work go to his Soundcloud; for now, here’s “Time (Better Not Stop) (André Uhl Remix)”:
