Radio überlin vol. 1

by James Glazebrook

 Untitled1

Welcome to episode 1 of Radio überlin! For our first ever radio show, Zoë and I sat down to shoot the shit about Felix da Housecat being turned away from Berghain and taking it no so well, as well as the line-up of the first ever Lollapalooza Berlin. We also answered a reader’s question about making the big move from California to Berlin, and played tracks by Iggy Pop, Beam Up, Losers, Phia, Jamaica Suk and Alec Empire. Tune into Berlin Radio International every Thursday evening from 8:30pm to hear more!

Young Legionnaire are back! Something of a supergroup from the UK’s post-post punk scene, YL consists of Bloc Party’s Gordon Moakes, drummer Dean Pearson and frontman Paul Mullen, formerly of yourcodenameis:milo (one of our few sources of North East pride), and now the leader of the brilliant Berlin-based-ish electro rockers Losers. Young Legionnaire are writing news songs (yay!) and will be threatening to blow Idlewild off the stage at Lido this Sunday, March 1st. Come get some.

Music Montag: Best of Berlin 2014

by James Glazebrook

There’s nothing like a Music Montag end of year playlist to make you realise just how diverse the Berlin music scene is! Bookended by classic Zoë favourites that drive home the dominance of the city’s clubbing industry, elsewhere this year’s Best of Berlin runs the gammut of genres. There’s electro pop, indie, weirdo synth explorations, progressive metal, a healthy chunk of Bowie covers… even a hilarious advertising jingle and a track from a rock opera for kids! Hope you enjoy this pick-and-mix of the most interesting music (mostly) produced in Berlin this year. Boom.

Want to walk your ears down memory lane? Check out the Music Montag: Best of Berlin 2013 and the best of 2012.

Music Montag: DNA BLN

by James Glazebrook

Glitter Wasteland

DNA BLN is kicking off Berlin Music Week with an epic night of live music from hot new artists, plus DJs, food trucks, visual art and more! The teenage metal fan in us is looking forward to Yorkshire metalcore troupe Backstab Burial (Huddersfield, raise your horns!), while our more sophisticated side will be nodding our heads to the cross-genre electronic soul of Switzerland’s Glitter Wasteland (pictured above).

But the real big news for fans of mid-2000s English indie (like us!) is the return of members of The Cooper Temple Clause and north eastern math rockers Yourcodenameis:milo with Losers, injecting a lethal concoction of prog and emo into post-Soulwax electro rock. Rounding out this first showcase are Janice Prix (below), Those Goddamn Hippies and We Love Machines, plus DJs like Losers’ own Eddy Temple-Morris (XFM). Scroll down for a taste of things to come, and for full event details.
