Peaches at Lost Lectures Berlin

Peaches at Lost Lectures Berlin

You must know by now that we LOVE Peaches. Well, we were lucky enough to catch her, and a bunch of other inspirational speakers, at the inaugural Lost Lectures in Berlin. Pretty soon, the Lost Blog will post videos from the event in Stadtbad Wedding, including talks about 3D printing, community gardening platforms, open government, the theory that free will is an evolutionary construct and some pretty radical art, as well as the personal and affirming speech that led up to Ms. Nisker’s trip across the audience’s outstretched arms. Until then, enjoy watching the queen of electro-shock walking across hands and singing opera at the same time 🙂

Kiez Oper: Insanity

by James Glazebrook

Kiez Oper by Irene Moray

We’re prone to hyperbole, especially when it comes to Berlin, but Kiez Oper is definitely one of the best things we’ve ever experienced. Aiming to “bring opera into the 21st Century”, the far-from-traditional company performs up-close, in unexpected venues, most recently in Stadtbad Wedding.

As we sat down on the sloped floor of the disused swimming pool, we had no idea what to expect – until a cast member embedded among us suggested we pick up our coats, lest they get trampled on. Sure enough, singers walked through the crowd to get to the makeshift stage formed by the pool’s deep end, to perform a disturbing narrative with the theme “Insanity”, woven together from the compositions of Handel, Vivaldi, Bach, Britten and more. Compelling performances combined with state-of-the-art sound design and projected visuals created an immersive experience that we’ll never see repeated.

Boiler Room Berlin

by James Glazebrook

Modeselektor at Boiler Room Berlin

The Berlin outpost of the world’s leading underground music show, Boiler Room, has been broadcasting from the unique space of Stattbad Wedding for about 18 months now. During that time, the former swimming pool has hosted some of the best DJs and electronic acts in the world, including Carl Craig, Richie Hawtin, DJ Hell and überlin faves Modeselektor (celebrating above), Objekt, Redshape and Ellen Allien.

Boiler Room Berlin

Boiler Room Berlin is strictly invite-only, and we’ve been lucky enough to get into this Thursday’s CTM festival special. The frankly ridonkulous lineup includes Kangding Ray, dub master Pole and Mr. Digital Hardcore himself, the mighty Alec EmpireIf you can’t physically be there, tune into boilerroom.tv at 8pm (7pm GMT) to catch all the action. In the meantime, I’ve tried to pick some favourites from the archives, in which pretty much every set is a highlight, for your home viewing pleasure:
